BASE BASICS
Concealer vs. foundation: do you need one, both or neither?
Published-information research · Not a hands-on review
Start with the area you want to cover. A small targeted routine and an all-over base are different briefs; neither requires buying every category.
A makeup routine does not need to contain one item from every category. If you are deciding between concealer and foundation, first describe where you want coverage.
A localized brief versus an all-over brief
For a few selected areas, you may want to investigate a targeted product. For a more continuous base, an all-over foundation may be the clearer starting point. These are planning options, not application or suitability guarantees.
As one example, e.l.f. describes Hydrating Camo Concealer as full coverage with a satin finish. Its Soft Glam foundation is described as medium and buildable with a satin finish. The shared finish word does not establish interchangeable formulas, identical shades or identical performance.
Write the smallest routine that answers your question
- Only a few areas bother you: investigate targeted coverage before committing to an all-over routine.
- You want an overall base: choose that base’s coverage and finish first.
- You already own both: identify what each adds before buying a replacement for either.
- You are comfortable without coverage: buying neither is a valid decision.
Shade choice depends on the intended effect
A brightening look and a discreet local match are different goals. Do not assume that buying a concealer a fixed number of shades lighter is a universal rule. Ask the brand for advice about your exact intended use and product version.
Likewise, a matching-looking shade name is not evidence of an exact cross-product match. Our website does not provide tested swatches or claim a shade conversion. Product pages can narrow the search but cannot establish the result on your face.
Evaluate the routine, not just the bottles
Include application time, tools, total cost and whether you will actually use each item. Buying a second product to correct a poor first choice may be less useful than reconsidering the original brief.
We have not tested these formulas, their layering or their under-eye performance. Treat brand claims as the start of your research. If a purchase depends on crease resistance or long wear, seek evidence for that specific question rather than deriving it from a category name.
